The readily available Linux/BSD source is covered by the GNU license,
which means that any modifications done to support Solaris would also
require readily available modified source, which wouldn't do much for that
college student's bank account. 

Have you checked with Adaptec to see if they'll pick up the torch that 
SunSoft has dropped?
