Of course vi is a text editor, not a word processor, but when combined with a typesetting system like TeX it is a fine tool for producing beautiful publication-quality documents. I know many people who still use this combination (as I do when I'm working on my Sparc, though to be honest I do most of my work these days on W95 machines running TeX plus the very good PFE text editor).
