i have not tried NT on any of my 770's..
BUT, that having been said, here are some answers (i reserve the right to change
these upon learning how foolish one or more may be<g>)

there is, yes..NT4 is supported on the 'lesser' 770's (13.3TFT, no DVD or Mwave,
etc)
and these machines DO use batteries..
so the power applet is there..
but the discharge/charge option does not seem to be present..

i THINK NT did on the last machine i loaded it on, which was a 760XD..but now i'm

not the IBM 770 type CD..why not use your HDD in the drive bay.. ?
