Help:Sticky hinges & abuse = cracked cover assembly!

I'll be ordering a new "Top Cover Assembly", and asking tech support 
for help, but has anyone had similar troubles?
The hinges on my TP seem especially tight.  One and 1/2 years of 
college, travels, and abuse have nearly broken the plastic cover 
directly above the right hinge on the outside:

I've used epoxy and fiberglass, but the plastic is to slick for good 
adhesion. Any suggestions to loosen the hinges?
