Hello all,
I have recently bought a 755c with 20 Mb RAM and 340 Mb harddisk.
I removed the dos+windows installation and placed the preview release
of windows 95 (build 347) on it. I have had no real problems with the
installation, but are still lacking 256 color support and sound. I
suppose I could use the old drivers, but I have gotten around to this
yet.
I am quite happy with the machine, but shocked by the high prices on
extensions. For instance, I wanted to upgrade my memory from the
initial 4 Mb to more. The price of the original 16 Mb ram from IBM was
10.000 danish kroner (appr. 1.800 US$). I then found another supplier
which sold me 16 Mb Transcend RAM for half. Then I wanted to get a
larger harddisk, but again could not afford the original IBM 810 Mb
harddisk and bought an IBM OEM 720 Mb harddisk for a third of the
price of the original 810 Mb. Now however this has lead to some
problems, because the new harddisk was not recognized by the system
and after trying the new one -. the old one does not work. IBM
hotline says there is a mechanical error = bad news. Well I suppose
this will be sorted out .
I am interested in sharing experience with both Windows 95 and Linux
on the 755c. I was supposed to install Linux this weekend - but the
hardware failure stopped this.
BTW I am a research scientist and university teacher in Oral and
Maxillofacial Surgery and must I admit: somewhat of an addict for
getting the most out of my equipment and money.
Sincerely
Anders Nattestad
