You can use Windows 95's Western Digital drivers for 256 color on the
LCD (actually shades of grey on my machine, a TP750 mono) and 256 colors
at up to 1024x768 on an external monitor. The trick is having the
following line in CONFIG.SYS:
DEVICE=C:\IBMVESA\VESA.EXE
Make sure that the file is there and that there is also a properly
configured file called FRATE.DAT in the same directory. The Video
Features Disk installation handles this. The VESA.EXE program is
apparently some kind of BIOS extension. I've seen at least one other
machine (an AT&T Globalyst) with the same kind of situation under Win95.
Note that this device driver can't be loaded high; don't waste your time
trying.
The Win95 drivers are great; you can change resolutions on the fly. I
work on my external monitor most of the time in 800x600. When I start
crowding the screen with lots of windows, I just go into Desktop
Properties and switch to 1024x768 and wait for about 2 seconds. The
ThinkPad drivers for Win3.1 work also, but there's no reason I can see
to use them.
As for audio support, you'll have to use the ThinkPad Win3.1 drivers
here. The good news is that they work just fine for WAV and MIDI. Just
run the install program on the Audio Features Disk. For some reason,
though, the install program doesn't properly update SYSTEM.INI. The
README on the Audio Features Disk indicates the proper settings.
Win95 seems especially stable on my ThinkPad, more so than on other
machines I've tested it on. I think you'll like running it on your
'Pad.
