It was the right hand hinge next to the status LEDs.  It was a very common
problem on the 700 series that the hinges had too little lubrication.  The
case would creak as you opened it.  The hinges were just flexed too much
every time it opened and the right one finally gap'd open about a quarter of
an inch.  My IBM guy had tried to lubricate it about a month before it broke
but to no avail. There were warning messages posted on the Compuserve
Thinkpad Forum to the effect that you could ruin the color display if you
tried to oil the hinges.  I figured that my IBM guy would just get me a new
display if he messed it up with his lubricant but he ended up replacing it
because of the cracked hinge instead.
