Whatever it is, whatever purpose it serves, ThinkPads are the only laptops
I have ever seen that use such a type of connector.  I don't believe that
IBM is the one that got it right...  I've seen scores of laptops that use a
short round-type connector, such as those found on many portable electrical
appliances such as portable CD Players (Sony Discman) or plain old
walkmans...  

The plain fact is that IBM's connector snaps off very easily.  When its
under warranty, it's no problem to get a new one from IBM, but after the
warranty expires, it's gonna hurt me to have to pay ~125$ for such a piece
of crap...
