Subject: XJEM3288 Modem Problem
Hi--I've got a new XMEM3288 Megahertz modem on my t-pad 560, which
came installed with Win95.
I can't make it dial from an old dos favorite, ProComm Plus 2.1, or
from ProComm Plus for Windows (3.1)--
You do not want to use DOS com programs with 95.
They generally don't work in the dos box .
If you then try to boot to dos in 95 the PCMCIA services aren't loaded and
your modem can't be found. You could load card and socket services in your
config.sys etc (for DOS support only!!) But:
1 you don't have them
2 you REALLY don't want to use them.
If DOS modem support is really important to you :
install the MHZ point enabler . It should have come with your modem
if not it's on their WEB page. A point enabler is a tiny little program
(sometimes a TSR) that pokes a couple of registers and makes your modem look
like a com port.
Do NOT use win 3.x com programs with 95 !! The device drivers are just too
different and you stand a very good chance of screwing something up . ie the com
port driver.
Am I missing something (ProComm 2.1 for Windows doesn't list this
modem so I selected one that sounded similar)? Neither of these
programs seems to be able to find the modem, even though I've told
them it's on com 1.
I imagine I'll have the same problem with Quicken for dos--
No it works fine !
The modem works fine with dial-up networking and I'd love to have it
work with the dos programs, not just because I hate to have to
buy new programs, but because I really like the dos stuff.
Thanks--
Annelise
