Apparently under Win95, you don't use the Video Features program to change
these settings -- you use the Win95 mechanisms. Open your Display control
panel and select the Settings tab, then Change Display Type.
Make sure Adapter Type is Western Digital. Set Monitor Type to "Laptop
Display Panel (1024x768)". You'll likely need to reboot. Once you do,
again go into Display, then Settings, and the Desktop Area (resolution) bar
should now be active. On my 755CD, I can switch between:
640x480 16-bit (High) Color
640x480 8-bit (256) Color
800x600 8-bit (256) Color
1024x768 8-bit (256) Color
(Which reverts to just the 640x480 flavors when the notebook isn't connected
to an external monitor).
Win95 does the switch on-the-fly (no reboot needed) and if it works, expects
you to click to retain the new setting, otherwise it times out after a few
seconds and restores the previous video mode. (I guess they expect it will
fail.)
There's a Win95 PowerToy from Microsoft called QuickRes which puts a little
icon in the system bar and allows you to switch modes quickly w/o going
through the Display applet.
When I was playing with this a few weeks back, I found that switching between
Laptop Display, CRT, or Both was best done using the Fn-F7 and not IBM's Video
Features program. The former worked, the latter crashed. However, I don't
have the latest BIOS burned so this might have been fixed.
