Installation of OS/2 Warp 4 on TP760ELD

Hi,

I have a IBM ThinkPad 760ELD, and I'm planning to install OS/2 Warp 4
alongside with the pre-installed Win95, all on a 810MB hard disk.

The main problem is, the UltraBay, which accepts either the CD-ROM drive or
diskette drive, can only use one drive at a time, and it is not possible to
hot-swap the two drives. I can't afford to buy the external cradle for the
diskette drive. So, I intend to copy all the disk images from the CD-ROM to
the hard disk and install using the diskette drive.

Now, what I should do, is to defragment the Win95 primary partition C:, and
leave about 300MB of disk space for OS/2. I calculated that I would need to
install a total of about 92(+20 swap)MB of OS/2 components, and the images
are a total of about 193MB. I would then use Partition Magic to shrink the
Win95 partition C:, and create a logical drive D: in a extended partition for
installation of OS/2.

However, I realized that I wanted to format and install on a HPFS drive, and
that will complicate matters. I hope somebody can tell me whether the
following procedure will work.

In order to install on the HPFS D: drive, I first need to run FDISK from the
OS/2 diskettes, and format the D: drive, after I have created it using
Partition Magic. After the drive is formatted to HPFS, I need to boot to OS/2
and copy the images from the CD-ROM. But then I will need to modify
CONFIG.SYS on the OS/2 diskette to recognise the CD-ROM drive. Assuming that
that is successfully done, I then copy the files from the CD-ROM drive to the
HPFS D: drive. After copying the images, I can then boot off the diskettes
again to start installing OS/2 on D: drive, using the images from the same
drive (I understand that I have to perform some modifications to the OS/2
diskettes as well, according to the document OSINHDLT dated 11/14/96). Once
installation is complete, I can also delete the images from drive D: to
reclaim disk space.

Phew, any problems with the above procedure? Please comment freely.

Also, the procedures described in the first edition of the ThinkPad
760E/760ED User's Guide, pages 184-6, are quite similar to OSINHDLT. Which
one should I follow?

BTW, does anyone with the same ThinkPad have had problems installing OS/2
Warp, because of the Sanyo 4X CD-ROM drive or Cyber9320 PCI video chipset? Do
I need to follow the procedure mentioned in the User's Guide, pages 187-8?

Thank you for any help and suggestions.
