This is common with power management systems built into the
BIOS. When you activate a power management function, it calls
a BIOS routine which the CPU is forced to run. If this happens
during a critical time, like when the CPU is busy handling modem
data, you can get an error.
The 701 may be a little more prone to this because functions
like the battery meter are built into the BIOS (most other
laptops use a program, which only needs to make a single BIOS
call, not run an entire routine). The most extreme example is
hitting Fn-F1 to get into the setup screen. That'll stop
anything the 701 is doing dead in its tracks.
The upside to this is that the 701's power management will work
under any operating system, any circumstances short of a
complete system lock-up.
