machine, I feel like I am taking a step backwards because of the form factor.

Actually Dennis, you shouldn't feel that way (despite all the pain and
suffering you've gone through to get to this point).

Like you, I had a 701C that I really liked a *whole LOT* (well, mine
didn't fall apart continuously like yours, but...). After dealing with a
heavyweight 750C for 2 years, it was *VERY* nice to have a small,
lightweight machine.

I won't go into details, but my wife needed a computer so I gave her my
701C and replaced it with a 560 for me.

At first, I wasn't too sure I liked the 560 very much. Clearly, it was
"bigger" when I really liked the 701C better for its smaller form factor.

However, it grew on me--and "bigger" is a misnomer. In thickness, the
701C is a full 1/2" thicker and in terms of weight, about 1/2 lb. *heavier*
than the 560. Combine that with the bigger, higher-res. screen and the
faster chip & larger hard drive, and I have no doubt you'll be loving the
560 in no time--oh, and no need to carry that little port replicator extra
around with you all the time. The wideness of the 560 allows a full
compliment of ports without the replicator. Also, it uses a Li-Ion
battery, which is superior in life for the weight and easier to care for.

As a student, I use a backpack a hell of a lot more than a briefcase, and
I'll also say the 560 "lays" better (being thinner, its much like a spiral
notebook whereas the 701C was like a thick calculus book) in my backpack.
In a briefcase, its pretty much the same.

At any rate, consider the 560 a bonus for your trouble. It took me a
couple of weeks, but now I no longer yearn for the 701C and no longer envy
my wife when she uses it. The only drawback at *all* that I see now is
that the 701C's speaker sounded much better than the thin-sounding 560 (oh,
and also the lack of a modem--but then the 701C's 14.4K modem sucked anyway).

I'm certain you'll grow to like your 560 even better than the 701 as I did.
