Up until recently, I didn't. ;-)
A while back I bought a backpack that had sort of a "compartment" designed
to pad & protect a notebook computer. I like it also because it keeps the
backside of the pack stiff & in a flat-form--much more comfortable for
carrying items that don't always conform to how a backpack should be shaped
on your back (i.e., bulge & poke your back).
For even better protection, PORT makes a backpack that likely incorporates
their "sling" design that cradles the computer with a space underneath the
sling for better protection in impact situations.
