Laptops safety at the airports/metal detectors

Thanks for all responses to my question.

The consensus seems to be that X-rays pose no or minimal threat to
laptops and only in the case of poorly shielded (old and mostly outdated
and thus unlikely to encounter) scanners or if accumulated through a
frequent scanning and thus dangerous for frequent fliers. However, there
seems to be the problem with metal detectors that can affect magnetic
media and are rather likely to render them useless.

Thus my new question is: how to avoid passing through them?
Can I request that my laptop be not subjected to this type of examination?
How can I know in advance that I am approaching a metal detector?
Do they inform you about it?

It's not my first international trip, but I have never had a laptop with
me so have not paid any attention to the things that could potentially
jeopardize its functioning. This time I will and when back I will share
my reflections with you. I will be changing planes several times.

Thanks in advance.
Waldemar

P.S.
When I am back, I will collect the answers to my questions concerning
the safety at the airports and post them at one of my web sites so that
others could use it as a FAQ type of thing.
