Re: Viruses in IBM downloads

I would suspect you had the virus on your system or floppies. There is
very little chance you got it from IBM.

Download the IBM 701 Win/95 upgrade stuff again. Put the files on totally
clean floppies...run Norton on them if you want to feel comfortable. Then
follow the instruction exactly!!!!!!! You do not do the bios upgrade from
the "C" drive...but rather from a clean boot from the "A" drive. After you
upgrade the bios to Ver 3O, you can then do the Win/95 upgrade. There is
an excellent set of instructions included with the bios upgrade.

The Win/95 installation will find all of your hardware just fine. The APM
works excellent. If you have other hardware attached, like PCMCIA cards,
SyQuest drive, mouse, monitor, etc., have everything hooked up when you do
the upgrade. I found the best install is to reformat the hard drive, and
do a fresh install. This heals a lot of sins and gives you the cleanest
install with the least amount of space used. You may also want to consider
formatting the hard drive into two partitions. But, the upgrade of Win/3.1
works fine. You can delete Win/95 if you don't like it. I would never go
back to Win/3.1.

Finally, a neat little trick when installing Win/95 on a reformatted drive
with the upgrade version of Win/95 is you don't have to install
Win/3.1...just start the install of Win/95, and when it asks for a previous
version of Windows, stick disk #1 from Win/3.0 or 3.1 or 3.11 in the "A"
drive, an "brows" to that drive...presto...it loads.

Good Luck
