Hmmm...Sounds strange why it doesn't work.  But have you tried 
http://www.us.pc.ibm.com/thinkpad and checked on Win95 drivers for IrDA? 
 I don't think it is exactly the same as a regular serial port, but don't quote me
on this.

You mean they have IrDA in LINUX?!?!?

Shoot, I can't even get sound or PCMCIA in Linux.
