As far as I know, neither OS/2 nor Linux runs Microsoft Word 97 or a few other
programs I need for work

I think you're right.  NT seemed a more complex and unwieldy program which needs
a lot of resources to operate.  If memory serves, the supposed advantages are
increased stability (this does not seem to be the case), security (which seems a
proxy for "users have a hard time running unauthorized programs") and file
system.  Disadvantages include driver and power management support which is not
as good as win95.

Is this right?
