Proprietary... each modem manufacturer must (apparently) publish a software utility to fix the problems presented by the digital portmasters... I have tried to use one modem's update on another (Lucent Technologies which also made many IBM modems) and it didn't "take" and have never found a solution for mY 760ED Mwave's connection to the (now Lucent) digital portmaster... although my ISP also has an analog connection for which my IBM has no problems.
