Re: THINKPAD 535E AND MWAVE QUESTION

There are two distinct problems here - the first concerns the V.8 tones
which are added as a part of the new 56k V.90 standard. These completely
trash some other modems (like a Telebit listening for PEP) but they are
not Livingston/Lucent's fault - anybody's terminal server running the
same protocol will do the exact same thing. The only solutions possible
here are to either get an upgrade from your modem vendor that can roll
through the V.8 tones ok, or you can use a sufficient number of commas
after the phone number in your dialing string such that your modem waits
until after the V.8 tones have passed. The number required is best
determined by making a few voice calls to the modem number while looking
at your watch and using a time (usually 2 secs per comma) slightly longer
than the longest time it takes to get past the first two tones.

The second problem concerns the Lucent modem code's inability to handle
flow control in the V.42 mode (it frequently hangs). Until Lucent fixes
this your only hope (if this is a problem for you) is to use MNP instead.
