ATF1 just resets the modem to the factory defaul settings stored
in ROM. It'll undo everything else on the string so it's not
something you want "add." :-)
Many people who have had problems with the modem have gotten it
to work by switching the error detection/correction from LAPM to
MNP5. I don't remember the AT string to do that, but the unit
should come with a nice manual for the modem which should
describe all the AT commands.
The modem is advertised as 14.4, but it also supports the 19.2
v.terbo semi-standard, which most modems support.

Don't pick it up by the keyboard. Also, the right side of the
keyboard slides out of the back right side. The plastic at that
end is very thin - it's just cosmetic. If you pick it up while
it's open with your right hand, do not pick it up there or it
will crack.
Also, a lot of people have reported a crack on the right side of
the lid, spaced about midway between front and back with the lid
closed. Usually people get this from sending in their machines
to EZ Serv. My guess is some part of the assembly/disassembly
process requires them to put pressure on this point and is
causing the crack. You might want to check to make sure yours
isn't cracked there since you said it's a refurb.
Try shaking the unit from side to side while it is on. I've had
some problems with the battery jiggling loose during transport,
causing loss of power and data. Hope you got the NiMH battery
and not the NiCd. The difference is about 2.5 hours vs. 1.5
hours of battery life.
Try plugging headphones into the jack on the side. I've gone
through three boards via EZ Serv trying to get rid of the
annoying static but never got rid of it. Strangely, if I plug
the headphones into the jack on the port replicator, I get no
static.

It will run hot with W95. Win95 doesn't seem to use the halt
command built into all modern processors. OS/2 and Linux use it
and the unit runs remarkably cool with them. Dunno about NT.
If you use it on your lap, I'd recommend you get:

The company that makes the carrying cases IBM sells for its
Thinkpads also makes a wrapper specifically for the 701. It
doesn't protect the sides, but it wraps around the top, back,
and bottom, with a velcro flap (which doubles as a wrist rest
when open) that completes the wrap when closed. There's a
sturdy plastic plate in the top and bottom, as well as a fair
amount of padding. I used to keep mine velcroed to my 701, but
have quit using it since I rarely travel with it anymore.
