Unresolvable mail address

A copy of your message is being returned to you because one or more of
the addresses you specified could not be recognized as addresses that are
understood by, or reachable from, this system.

Typically this means that a UUCP site you are trying to reach does not exist
in the UUCP maps, or that a domain name does not exist in the DNS, and
therefore cannot receive mail.

Please check your addresses for spelling errors, or consult with your local
postmaster or system administrator.

This is an automatic message.

P.S.: In bizarre circumstances you will see the address report below
rewritten as site.dom!user@%s. This happens when your envelope
address looks like user@site.dom, where site.dom is not a valid
      hostname.

Hi,

I recently acquired an NEC3FGe for use with my 755cx and Dock II. Right
now, I'm just using Win95's built in 755cx video driver at 800x600/256
Colors. This is mt preferred mode of operation. However, the screen
flicker on my 3FGe is horrible. How can I make adjust the refresh rate?
Should I go to the IBM VESA driver loaded from DOS? Any other options?

Doug,

If you installed the TP PCMCIA stuff under Windows or Warp, you should find
a PC Card Director
icon. Double click and double click on the slot with the card. If it is
configured, it should report
the IRQ and IO address block(s) used when configured. This of course
assumes that you have
the PCMCIA drivers correctly loaded in config.sys and for DOS/WIN have
EMM386 correctly set up
to give the PCMCIA drivers the correct size block of upper memory.

If you have the TP PCMCIA stuff, you might check to see if you are current.
You can download
the newest versions from www.pc.ibm.com and other IBM sites. There are some
fixes in the
later versions.

Some cards will not configure without a special enabling program. For
example, I have a
PCMCIA GPIB (IEEE-488 bus) card that will not enable until a special routine
which is linked
with the program I build runs. It will NOT work with OS/2 as it uses only
DOS CS/SS to enable.

If you run Warp, the system Info program can report quite a bit about
PCMCIA. Also, rmview /IRQ
will report interrupt usage and rmview /IO will report IO addresses.

Hope this helps,

Stuart

Just thought of it, I bought Systemsoft's Cardsoft Wizard Pro over
the weekend to see how well it worked. If you have never heard of it,
it's a 3rd party PCMCIA driver system that replaces your PCMCIA
drivers.

Systemsoft claims that their software automates dealing with a lot
of PCMCIA problems, though I didn't find it to be any more
impressive than EZ Play, though it may take slightly less memory
(75k DOS) and is a little slicker looking.. I haven't tried out the
power saving options yet, so I'm unsure how well it meshes with APM.

I talked to their tech support group once (over a problem that was
really my fault) and found them prompt, helpful and friendly. When I
called while they were busy, they responded to my voice mail message
in under 30 minutes and called me back at their expense (despite
their not having a toll-free support line).

I'm unsure if it's worth the $65 for Thinkpad owners who already have
pretty good PCMCIA support (I haven't tried any esoteric cards yet,
so it's possible this will come through in the long run if I try
anything out of the ordinary) but if any of you have friends with
laptops with less than stellar PCMCIA support, this might be a
decent product for them to look at.

standard marketing propaganda for the product can be found at

The tech manual confirms what IBM told you - the supervisor password,
unlike the power on password, is not defeatable. I'd be suprised if
there wasn't some less drastic way, yet still requiring service, to
defeat it. It wouldn't be a total shock to me though.

However, if the data is the thing, there is nothing non-standard
about those hard drives and I am sure the password if just a
boot-related vent, not an encryption system of any sort. You could
probably remove the drive from the case, make it a slave drive and
attach it to an existing system (with the proper 44 pin -> 40 pin
adaptor, of course) and access the data that way. Not for the faint
of heart, obviously.

I recall that a few months ago there were some lively discussions
on upgrading the disk drive when you had to use the existing
Thinkpad caddy. I think that someone had detailed instructions
for doing that ... can anyone point me to them?

Once the drive is upgrades, is the Thinkpad BIOS autosensing
for the drive characteristics or just how do you enter the new
info?

This may or may not be true. I was under the impression (may be wrong) that
the disk required the controller, and the controller was frozen by the PW.

After reading my 760C documentation concerning this, it would appear the
supervisor or hard disk passwords are not resettable, as you were told by
IBM. Since I've not heard of any way to get past this, your request has
prompted me to provide my supervisor password to management, just in
case. If by chance you do find a way, please let us know it's
possible.

I do like this feature though. The stories I've heard about securing PC
access on boot, floppy or idle timeout using some add on security
software is rife with support problems and system crashes. And we know
that using non volatile memory for power on password is just an
annoyance to thieves and the like. This method avoids messing with my
operating system(s) or boot record. All computers should have this
security feature. It should make the system less attractive to theft if
it can't be used without replacing the system board and hard drive.

Hmmm... One thing that might be worth trying is to remove the back-up
battery from the Thinkpad (used for the clock etc and lives just above
the battery on a 750CD), and the main battery and leave the machine for
a while. If the chip is NVRam or such it should discharge and loose any
data stored.

I really don't know if this will work, but might be worth a go,

I had this problem on my old IBM LS40SX laptop. The only thing I had to to
whean all "safety/secrecy" talk was over, was to short-circuit a small
switch on the moterboard for 10 seconds- But it startet with the same "the
motherboard must be replaced"

How do I turn off the sleep mode on my 701? I use it 99.9% of the time
with the AC Adaptor plugged in... and quite often I use it to browse
the net and ftp files. It is real annoying with I turn my back to do
something else and the machine blanks the screen and goes to sleep.
When it does this, it will sometimes mess up file transfers in progress.

Thanks for any info.

What OS are you using? I seem to remember much mail about Win95 so
 I'll go with that.

With Win95 you need no PCMCIA drivers, so to avoid problems with 2
 cards do the following.

 1. Take the first card and plug it into SLOT 1. If you then run
START MENU -> ControlPanel -> Add New Hardware, it should find this
device. If you now go to START MENU -> Control Panel -> System, you can
see the device you have just added. Double click on this and goto the
resources tab. Here you can change the IRQ and Memory used by that
 device.

 2. Repeat above, and it should be possible to get the two not to clash.

Worth noting however that I actually disabled one of my COM: ports with
the Thinkpad software in order to have enough free IRQ's to allocated
to PCMCIA Modem, PCMCIA Ethernet and MWave Modem.

Well, I hope there isn't an easy way round it, or it defeats the object.
The crooks would probably get to know the method before the innocent user!

We had a similar problem with a Dell Latitude. In this case, Dell
had a "secret" password which they could use to unlock it. Sounds like
a reasonable compromise.

Message-Id: <01BB0757.982DACE0@blmi01-s05.QC.Bell.CA>

Hello everyone,

My ThinkPad (760CD) has Win95 configured with remote access to our company's
LAN.

I have the Mwave 2.1 drivers installed and a PCMCIA Megahertz XJ2288 modem.

With the Mwave modem, I always connect with my host at 28800 bps.

With the XJ2288 modem, only rarely do I connect at 28800. Most of the time
it connects at 26400 and sometimes at even lower speeds.

Why doesn't it connect at 28800 bps like the Mwave does?

This is with the same telephone line and cable.

Thanks for any help...

Eric

Sounds terrible (Dell's secret password) that means that folks working
for Dell can get into your machine. I MUCH prefer IBM's answer!

Ric,

What firmware revision are you running? Some of the later flash upgrades
solve connectivity problems but the resulting carrier speed is a trade-off.
With that being said, you should keep in mind that v.34 carriers re-train
regularly, and line conditions are such that a 28.8 connection rarely
maintains itself at that speed anyway.

The short answer is: Read the manual.

The long answer is to hit Fn-F1, then look through the many power
settings. One will be for suspend timeout, one will be for disk
spindown, one will be for screen blank, etc.

Incidently, you can have different settings for when your 701 is
on AC or battery. So just because it doesn't sleep when on AC
doesn't mean it won't sleep when on battery.
