IT WORKS!!

Thanks Don, everything worked exactly as you outlined, AFTER I disabled
Enhanced Video in the Thinkpad Setup - Video Controller and set DISPLAY to
CRT only.

So, thanks again to everyone who provided input on this.  Ain't
collaboration grand! My XP17 looks great and I'm now off to get that little
Power Toy. :-)
