If it was used in the field often, it could very well look older than its

These two problems should be repairable.

The brightness control is only for the 701CS model; doing nothing 
brightness-wise is normal for the 701C.

It probably depends on which OS you're running, and how often you need to 
hit the hard disk.

I don't use Windows 95 on my 701C, so I can't help you there.

It can't hurt to try!

If you call the IBM service number and tell them about the first two
problems, _and_ your 701C is still in warranty, then I'd recommend
including an extra note with the 701C when you send it to the Repair
Center, mentioning not only the first two problems but also the bad pixels
and the missing PCMCIA cover; with any luck it'll reach a conscientious
repair person who'll take care of it all.

"Caveat emptor" is a long-standing piece of advice.
