Re: Linux on 755CD
Beth,
The price Webpage is at:
http://www.pricewatch.com/
Though it seems to be down at this time.
The HP contact is:
Jerry Schurr at 317-582-4567. He will try to call you or you can call him.
His Email is Jerry_Schurr@hp.com
And then here are some Linux threads from the Thinkpad maillist. I only
typically saved things for my machine which is an oddball 755CD. There may
not be as many Linux messages as I said. I think NT is starting to be a
discussion item.
Thanks
Mike

I have been running Linux on my 755CD for the last two years. Works
pretty good but the MWave stuff is not fully supported. If you boot
DOS first and initialize the MWave, then the Sound Blaster emulation
and listening to audio CDs works. No go on the modem part though. I
have not used the PCMCIA card you mention. I use a GVC ethernet card
and a GVC modem card which both work great. The only trick with it
is the CDROM drive. The 1.2.13 Linux kernels don't support it very
well and it loses data. The problem was fixed in the first 1.3
release so its easy to patch 1.2.13 by copying the drivers/block/
ide-cd.c stuff from a 1.3.1 release or just upgrade to the newest
2.0.x kernels.
Let me know if I can help you more!

I also have a 755CD that I run Linux on. I wrestled with this problem a
(very short) while before I settled on the less elegant method of copying
the base and kernel Slackware disk sets to a dos partition and doing the
inital install from there. After I had a minimal Linux installation going,
I was able to load the rest of the system off the CD.
If you want to try a full install by swapping the drives, I believe you'll
need a kernel with ATAPI/IDE CD-ROM and APM support compiled in. I really
don't know if such a boot image exists.
Hope this helps a little.

Hi,
I just got a 760ED running Win95 and think it's terrific.
I also have an extra hard drive for the purpose of running Linux,
but although I know Unix fairly well I am having a heap of trouble
configuring XFree86. The X that came with my Debian distribution
didn't know about the Trident TGUI 9660 video card, so I got
XFree86 3.1.2G beta. Now xinit works, but it thinks I have
only 640x480, and I can't get it to recognize the mouse.
I am poring over the faq and archive of this list, but if anyone
out there has faced this and would identify herself to me,
I would be deeply grateful.
Thanks in advance,
-Bruce

Someone asked how to get SVGALib working with Linux on a TP701 (SVGA
graphics in full-screen mode, not X). I told him SVGALib didn't
support the 701's graphics chipset (CT65545) at this time.
There's a patch out that allows 640x480x256 and 800x600x256 SVGALib
modes on this chipset. I haven't tried it myself so I can't say how
well it works.

The hard drive can be upgraded, there are a few screws to remove and the
drive lifts out. Not sure what size of HDD's will fit.
The floppy & CD-ROm are useable at the same time. THe cd-rom is not
removable.
The power adapter has the 2-pin plug.
