Dear Richard,
I had the exact same problem (I had no network card).
If I removed the extra 16 MB of memory, then the thinkpad would shut
down with no problem. Did you try this?
I sent it back to the IBM Service, they initially said that it
was a software problem (my software of course), but while they
attempted to wipe my hard disk and re-install win95, they discovered
that the parallel port(!) was faulty, so they replaced the
motherboard and the hard drive (!) After this, the problem evaporated
(The thinkpad was running on Bios 1.01)
You will definitely need to upgrade to 1.05 Bios as a first step...
it irons out a very long list of problems.
