I suspect that the 701 was a quality control nighmare for IBM - too bad,
since I still think it has the best form factor in laptop history - I
much prefer it to my 560 with which it was replaced.  Lots of people on
this list have had problems with their 701s.

I did have problems with a couple of IBM reps; you have to poke around
until you find someone you can deal with.  As for repair quality, IBM
never did manage to repair my 701 (after several atempts), though they
*did* do nice things like tighten the hinges, clean the case, etc.

For all that, IBM still has to be the best in the business.  (Recent
surveys which say otherwise rated companies on criteria of questionable
long-term importance, like time until the phones are answered, or
cost of service out-of-warrantee.)
