RE: refurbished IBM products
My TP 760E was also bought Refurbed.
It arrived semi DOA . Hard Drive would not spin up first few times ,when it finally did, it soon
crashed.
My experience with EZServe was less wonderful .
They send the shipping container to the east coast ( I was in Washington, west coast)
Wasted a full day waiting for the DAMN thing.
They finally resend it after FEDEX returned it .
Called FEDEX to pick up the now filled box.
FEDEX could not pick up the box (but spend 2 days wasting my time by
saying that to call them shortly to see if they could fit me in) so I then delievered it to the airport
myself.
I send a long letter with TP documenting the whole disaster .....no response.
10 Days after receiving my "new" toy, I finally got it. (ie working)
The "New" install of all the software wasn't; it was only Win95 not A or B (OSR2 )
plus non optimum video drivers.
TP did NOT come with a CD of 95, only the "option " to make 30-40 backup disks.
UHH folks my computer is supposed to work for me ...not the other way around.
NOR can you pay a small fee and get the CD. It is NOT available.
(Mind you Toshiba has no problem selling you a CD(s).A CD also ships with a few of their models)
The TP itself is excellent .
It looks new..
Best part ..The price was half of a "new" one.
The warranty is 3 years ANYwhere on this planet .
A 12.1 inch Active Matrix screen is "nice".Only one small pixel sometimes stays on.
M-wave support is dismal. Netmeeting does Not work full-duplex and NO one has an answer.
I have not tried the new 33.6 K drivers but everyone says stay away.
IBM part number/Model number system is MORONIC . At last count there are 50 + different versions of the 760.
EVERY part has at least 2 numbers . One is regular the other as a Field Replaceable Unit ....this is nuts !
Even my 760E has a High and a Low version . The High version has a few more millimetres of height to fit a CD ROM.
Keyboard is good but Not great . My TP 360e has a better keyboard.
The AC adapter is MUCH better (smaller) than the older 75x series.
Most Toshibas don't need a AC adapter...which is better still.
Quality of plastic is better than the Toshiba Tecras (their High end model)
The ability to add 2 DIMM modules is good . The use of a DIMM carier (another circuit card)
to hold the sockets is stupid.
I feel much better now (grin).
..peter..
As to the POSSIBLE use of used parts in the Refurbed units ...who cares.

Subject: re: refurbished IBM products
In the past two months, I have bought two refurbished Thinkpad 560
(P100/8MB/810HD) from two different vendors. Unfortunately, both of
Thinkpads required repair upon my receiving them. (Fortunately, IBM's
EZServe was wonderful). I was wondering if others have had bought
refurbished IBM goods, whether they be Thinkpads or others products, and
encountered the same unfortunate circumstances.
Moreover, one thing I have noticed about the two IBM notebooks I bought was
that it had a sticker on the back which stated ,"The product is refurbished
and contains USED parts." (capital letters are mine). I have bought many
refurbished products before in the past from many different manufacturers
such as Compaq, HP, NEC, Sony, etc. but none of them claim to use "USED"
parts. Furthermore, all of the non-IBM refurbished products I have bought
appeared new, physically- you couldn't tell them apart from a "new" product
with the naked eye. However, the two IBM's I received had some minor
physical blemishes. I was wondering if anybody knows anything about how
IBM "refurbishes" its goods.
POORLY ;-|
