Actually, at the time MWave was a pretty good idea. Instead of
hobbling the TP755 with a 14.4 modem for life, MWave let you
upgrade it.
I think the problem was that IBM made the MWave software
dependent on the OS, and they underestimated how quickly modem
speeds would quadruple. It took, what, a year and a half? for
IBM to bring out the 28.8 upgrade. Obviously there was
something wrong in their thinking that software could be made
faster than hardware...
In contrast, the TP701's modem is also a software modem, but its
software runs independent of the TP and OS, thus it works just
fine under Linux. Unfortunately, I haven't seen any upgrades
for it. (IIRC the chipset that does the 701's Soundblaster
emulation had enough processing power left over to do a
14.4/19.2 modem so IBM took advantage of it.)
