If enough suckers buy it, then it works.
I figure within two years I will have my AV system integrated with my
computers and be able to RECORD and PLAY my own CDROM based video.
DVD makes me sick. Technically it is a tiny mouse step "better" than
laserdisc, practically it is two baby steps beyond VHS, in marketing
Superman just stepped out of the phonebooth.
Movie makers have been looking for a way to charge per view for some time
though, and it will just depend on if they jump on board. The non-copy
stuff is pure consumer fluff, there is no way I can think of that a serious
person will not be able to make copies via the output video signal.
Something like 4 million VCRs are sold in the USA every year, that is a bit
of a trend to buck with a "marginally" better format.
