Thinkpad 340 LCD

Tonight I had been using my Thinkpad 340. At one point I cut the computer
off and when it booted up the display was black but not like the computer
was turned off. It's really hard to describe. It had a tint to it but I
couldn't see any objects or anything. It's as if you cut the brightness and
contrast all the way down.

I started fooling with the brightness and contrast adjustments but this had
no effect on the LCD.

After Windows 95 stopped booting I cut the computer off. Then I turned it
back on. This time the LCD worked but there were these horizontal lines
going up the screen. After 3 or 4 minutes the lines stopped and the screen
looked normal.

I'm curious, does this mean the monochrome display is going out? Or possibly
the video driver? Could this just be a fluke or soemthing?

What would cause this to happen? If the LCD is going out, on average how
much does a new one cost?
