Re: TP701 Overall Quality and Easyserve

Paul,

I'm sure you'll get varying opinions but mine is totally positive.

having their 701 fall apart,

My usage pattern for my 701 seems to be that I use it extensively for three or four months,
taking it to client locations, and then it sits on my desk next to two of my desktops for
three or four months. I am now in the extensive use phase. My TP 701 is getting lugged
around several times each day. The top is opened and closed at least a dozen times per day
and the port replicator is connected and disconnected several times as well as inserting
and removing PCMCIA cards (token ring and ISDN TA) several times. Thus far nothing has
broken. Well, that's not entirely true, I broke the plastic tab which holds the port
replicator in place when I dropped the ThinkPad about five inches.

I've only had one experience with Easyserve. My internal modem died and after four months I
finally had time to send it in. A few months earlier I had pooked a gouge in the LCD
screen with my finger nail while pointing to something. When I sent the 701 in to have the
modem repaired they returned it with a new port replicator and they replaced the screen
even though I hadn't mentioned it. About two weeks later I noticed that my battery only
lasted 30 - 45 minutes when fully charged, instead of about two hours. I called Easyserve
and said that they must have changed batteries on me. They sent me a new one and I returned
the one I got. I think that's pretty good service. I wouldn't dispute your experiences
but mine have been totally positive.

> PS/2s, and 3 XTs, amongst tons of other IBM peripherals,

Well, I have a couple of PS/2's also, one of which is ten years old and I would like to
believe that my ThinkPad would last as long and run as well (but there's not way to make
two CPU upgrades to the TP). Last year I worked with a client who had standardized on
Toshiba laptops. In the five months we worked together each member (four) of their team
had to replace their Toshiba's because of one sort of failure or another; some had broken
parts and others had dead electronics. Meanwhile my ThinkPad kept rolling along. Even
though their Toshiba's were Pentitums there was no effective difference in the time we
required to get our work done (of course we weren't doing anything CPU intensive).

The only compliant I had with my 701 was the 540MB max hard drive. I bought a 1GB which is
covered by the warranty and that fixed that problem. I'm going to by a 2.1 GB in the next
couple of weeks (also covered).

Sorry to hear about you negative experiences.
